ES2007s Blog #1

In my opinion, developing effective communication is very important as most people will spends great amount of their time in an interpersonal situation such as in school, workplace, family, friends, etc. It is an unavoidable situation that happens in every day life. Hence, developing good communication skills is essential when one interact with another. For instance, when trying to get things done as soon as possible in a group project. Regardless of one’s job scope area, races and even status in the company, it is an advantage over the others if one has better communication ability. In the case of written lab reports, being able to explain the theory behind the process will yield better clarity/results as opposed to mere regurgitation of information

By practising effective communication to improve and promote interpersonal relationship is a successful strategy to most situations faced. Advantages that effective communication could bring about are far way too many to be mentioned. Be it personally or professionally, the capability to communicate well will tend to change a great aspect of our life. Knowing how to converse with people is a totally different idea as compared to effective communication. The doubt is how can one communicate effectively? Effective communication help to strengthen the ability to share information with people, to understand what the information is about and to feel what others are trying to convey. Needless to say, effective communication skills are essential in any sphere of human being interaction.

I entirely agree with the point that pei pei had mentioned, knowing how to converse with people is a totally different idea as compared to effective communication. Everyone does and knows how to communicate with people but to communicate effectively is a different issue after all. It is well written, pei pei mentioned about how effective communication aids in different areas and its advantages, perhaps she can illustrate with more examples relating to communicate effectively with friends and family.

like the way you wrote about group projects. A lot of efforts have to put in during group project to ensure that it can be finish within the given time. Effective communication can improve relationships and prevent conflicts too.

Hey Pei Pei,

Good communication skills is indeed a must when interacting with fellow project group members. In my previous semester, I had the opportunity to experience how different accents could cause confusion for projects. Among the group member was a Vietnamese national and there were times when we had difficulty in trying to understand what he was trying to say. This was due to the fact that his pronunciation of words was quite different from how we pronounced ours.

This encounter taught me to adapt to foreign accents. By interacting with him throughout the project, I became accustomed to his accent and could eventually understand a majority of what he was trying to say.

Hi Pui Pui, thanks for your post. Like many of your classmates, you have given many reasons why we need to communicate effectively.

What I hope to read is a blog that has a more personal touch to it - what effective communication means to you as a student, friend, daughter, budding scientist, etc.

Be careful with your sentence construction. For example, this sentence, "Knowing how to converse with people is a totally different idea as compared to effective communication" needs to be rephrased to make it clearer. Do remember your grammatical rules too (please see your first sentence). Remember, we want to be able to communicate our ideas across effectively.

Good effort!
